Lost & Found
In Albert Park, in central Auckland, I chose a bench in the shade on one of the main walking paths. I placed a cardboard box with the words “Lost & Found” written in black marker on a folding table in front of a park bench. I sat behind the table.
Over the course of an hour I received numerous sideways glances.
Some people pretended I did not exist and avoided eye contact.
One man waved a little hello to me.
Three people walked by while saying “lost and found”.
I received a few smiles.
An older man with a young daughter asked me if I was lost or found. I replied that I was neither, that I was providing a service. He approached my table and looked into the empty box and said, “Good service!” I told him it had been a slow day.
