the shape of elsewhere
installed in the group show, Sanctuary
December 2025
The shape of elsewhere emerges from a sustained and layered process of making, unfolding over months of rhythm, resistance, doubt and persistence. Conceived as a three-part tapestry, each piece gives rise to the next: the weft of one becomes the warp of another, carrying forward both material and memory. Each part is incomplete without the others, bound in a relationship of mutual dependence.
The work is shaped by an enquiry into connection: to place, to people, to that which endures yet often remains unnamed. Having lived between many locations, with no single site of permanent belonging, the act of weaving becomes a way of tracing, negotiating and imagining continuity within a world where sanctuary itself is uncertain and continually re-formed.
What moves through the work is not simply colour or fibre, but an ongoing insistence on relation. A reaching downward. A form of grounding. Time in this piece is layered rather than linear, sedimented into the warp and weft, suggesting that sanctuary is not a fixed location or enclosure, but a mindset formed through connection, attentiveness and the persistent shaping of belonging.
